A sequence of three 45-minute classes for children entering kindergarten.  Jump into literature and get messy creating art inspired by favorite children’s authors with Jenn Litt. Grab your lab coat and enter the exploratory world of science, as lil’ scientists create concoctions and wacky experiments with Libbey Riddle. Sing, dance, and move your way through the alphabet, the calendar, and much more with Allison Arnold and the music of Dr. Jean. A 15-minute recess and a 15-minute snack break complete the morning. Allison Arnold teaches the Academic Learning Program at Ashley Falls School.  Libbey Riddle teaches second grade at Village Elementary School. Jenn Litt teaches kindergarten at Sycamore Ridge Elementary School.

 

 

KINDER KRITTERS

Then it’s time to explore the magic of literature with Linda Newquist.  Her hands-on activities will enhance children’s enjoyment of their favorite picture books.  Sing, move, play, and explore musical instruments with Michelle Beeson. A 15-minute recess and a 15-minute snack break complete the morning. Teresa Solis teaches first grade at Del Mar Heights School. Linda Newquist teaches kindergarten at Sage Canyon School. Michelle Beeson teaches music at Del Mar Heights School.

 

 

KINDER KLUB

A sequence of three 45-minute classes for children entering kindergarten.  Budding artists, let your imagination fly as you paint, dabble, and draw in an art potpourri with Jenn Litt.  Learn about butterflies, insects and all those "Creepy Crawlies" around us by going on a bug hunt and other fun activities with Amber Daige.  Learn your ABC’s through music, movement, and art.  Create letters of the alphabet through hands on projects with Jill Wojtkowski. A 15-minute recess and a 15-minute snack break complete the morning.  Amber Daige teaches the Academic Learning Program at Ashley Falls School.  Jenn Litt teaches kindergarten at Sycamore Ridge Elementary School.  Jill Wojtkowski teaches kindergarten at Sycamore Ridge Elementary School.

 

 

KINDER KIDS

Explore the colorful world of Eric Carle with Samantha Spelts and create an Eric Carle inspired book of your own.  Dabble into art with Teresa Solis expressing yourself with a variety of art media.  Join the CCW kindergarten band as you sing and play musical instruments with Michelle Beeson. A 15-minute recess and a 15-minute snack break completes the morning. Teresa Solis teaches first grade at Del Mar Heights School. Samantha Spelts teaches kindergarten at Juniper Elementary School. FIRST GRADE FRIENDS

A sequence of three 45-minute classes for children entering first grade.  Climb aboard the spaceship and blast off into outerspace with Mariebelle Oliva in an out of this world science exploration. Join Amber Daige for an ocean of fun as you dive into the deep blue to explore the creatures that live in the sea. Enter the imaginative and colorful world of famous children’s author Eric Carle with Samantha Spelts, as you explore the skills of literacy and art. A 15-minute recess and a 15-minute snack break completes the morning. FIRST GRADE WORLD
Grade 1    Session 2

                      

A sequence of three 45-minute classes for children entering first grade.  Become a math monkey with Mariebelle Oliva, exploring the concepts of time, money, addition, and subtraction while learning about a jungle of animals.  Journey to Japan with Kimiko Lange and explore a country on the other side of the world.  Learn about Japanese culture through art, crafts, and games.  Strike up the band with a handmade xylophone and a cereal box guitar, and sing classic folk songs with Mike Redman. A 15-minute recess and a 15-minute snack break complete the morning. Please send a snack and juice box with your child each day.  Kimiko Lange is a recent graduate of Wellesley College with a B.A. in Japanese Language and Literature.  Mariebelle Oliva teaches second grade at Ashley Falls School. Mike Redman is a special education teacher in the San Marcos School District.

 

 

A STITCH IN TIME
Grades 4+ Session 2

 

Apprentice seamstresses and tailors; join us to take up a needle and thread.  Would you like to learn to sew?  And to use a sewing machine?  Then this is the class for you!  You will get your creative juices flowing and learn a lot of new skills & techniques while making some fun projects.  You will also do some hand sewing.  Caution:  Once you start sewing, it may be difficult to stop!  All sewing machines and fabric will be provided.  Teri Nance has enjoyed quilting and sewing for the past 27 years.

 

 

AMAZING ARTISTS

Are you fascinated by Georgia O’Keefe’s flowers or Picasso’s mysterious faces?  Grab your smock, pencils, and paint brushes and join Amazing Artists.  Study the Masters and learn how to use their techniques to create your very own works of art!  Kelly Rampino is a first grade teacher at Solana Santa Fe Elementary School.

 

 

AMAZING SPORTS CHALLENGE

Do you like to try new games and variations on sports? Come be a part of the Amazing Sports Challenge.  You can play softee hockey, crab soccer, frisbee golf, and create and complete your own obstacle courses.  We’ll have fun until we can’t take it anymore!!  Robert Schengel teaches fifth grade at Chula Vista Elementary School.

 

 

BASKET WEAVING AND BEYOND

This workshop is an introduction to hand weaving. You will learn basic weaving techniques and get an overview of the different types of materials used in weaving.  Also you will discover the many things — both practical and beautiful — made through weaving and the various countries where weaving is practiced.  Projects may include place mats, pot holders, coiled baskets, and reed baskets.  This workshop will be fun and informative and kids will make something beautiful for their home! BOOK ARTS

Got a story to tell about your dog?  Or a slimy green pizza-eating alien?  In this class you are the author and illustrator.  Join us for a fun-filled session creating your own books.  You may choose what kind of books you want to make such as a joke book, diary, photo album, “how-to” book, pop-up book, shape book, filmstrip book, and much, much more! Amaze your family and friends by bringing home a portfolio of your completed books.  Get ready, people may be asking for your autograph!  Karina Greenway, is the Media Specialist at Ashley Falls School.

 

 

BUTTERFLIES, LADYBUGS, AND DRAGONFLIES

Explore the wonderful world of these amazing insects through arts and crafts projects using sequins, sparkles, glitter, glue, and more.  Investigate the world of these flying insects through literature and art learning about both the science of insects and their beauty. Spotlight Ovations brings you Cirque de la Kidz, a high energy circus arts program with hands-on training by a professional instructor!  Emily Calabrese will encourage you to use your strength, athletic endurance, and creativity as you explore the thrills of stage combat/martial arts, acrobatics, juggling, pantomine, clowning and puppetry. Join this truly unique extravaganza and star in a magnificent Big Top Finale! Emily Calabrese is a trained professional performer in San Diego and Los Angeles, and earned a degree in theatre performance.

 

 

CLAY CREATIONS

Unearth your creativity while perfecting slab, coil, sculpture, and pinch hand-building techniques. Explore texturing, scaffito, under glazing, scoring, add-ons, and piercing. Have fun claying around! All projects will be glazed and fired and ready for display.  Different projects each session and from previous Clay Creations classes. Sandra Dodd is a local artist who has taught art to children for many years. 

 

 

COOL KIDS, COOL MANNERS
Grades 3-4   Session 1
                    

How do you start a conversation with the new kid in your class? What do you do if you break something at your friend's house? Do you need to send a written thank you or is an email thanks okay? In this workshop kids learn the manners that will get them through everyday situations, such as telephone, refrigerator, restaurant, foreign country, and classroom manners. The emphasis is on helping kids figure out the respectful, considerate, or kind thing to do. Entertaining and informative role-playing will be used to engage the children in this fun workshop.  Catherine Kaufman is a syndicated newspaper food columnist, and blog meister who has launched a popular healthy eating and safe food site, and television personality who is known under the moniker of “The Kitchen Shrink.”

 

 

CRAFTY WOOD ART

Turn wood into works of art by building, designing and artistically painting your very own birdhouse, flower-planter box, clever bug cage contraption and more.  Children will learn to use tools and become handy girls and boys in this fun woodworking class. Tamara Hanlon is returning for her sixth-year teaching with CCW.  She has 18 years of professional experience working with children.

 

 

 

 

CSI – DEL MAR
Grades 4+    Session 1

                     

Are you a good detective? Student detectives will perform crime scene investigations using scientific process.  You will dust for fingerprints, examine hair samples under the microscope, use paper chromatography, and perform chemical reactions to analyze powders, make castings of footprints and compare DNA printouts.  Students will use urine samples (of course it is fake!!!) to test for color, odor, pH (acid/base) and presence of glucose. Students should bring an old adult size white cotton long sleeved shirt, to use as a lab coat.  Uma Krishnan teaches science at Torrey Hills School.

 

 

DIGITAL MOVIE MAKING

You oughta be in pictures! Here’s your big chance.  Come join this iMovie class and  become producer, director, and editor of your very own production.  Then turn composer and add your own music produced with GarageBand technology. Learn both the basics and finer points of cinematography, non-linear editing, staging, directing, and visual storytelling.  David Skinner teaches fifth grade at Carmel Del Mar School.

 

 

FANTASY FURNITURE
Grades 4+   Session 1
                    

Turn everyday furniture into art you can sit on.  Plan, then paint your ideas, and see your personality and imagination expressed in your wood.  It’s not a chair; it’s a work of art!  A great class to repeat.  You will complete a footstool, a birdhouse and a chair!  Susie Rothman teaches art in elementary schools throughout San Diego County.

 

 

FIND YOUR INNER ARTIST

Enjoy two weeks in a “spa for art”.  Explore, express, discover, create and escape.  Tap into your creative potential and find solace and sanctuary while you discover or rediscover your inner artist through woven photography and relief printmaking.  Paula Intravaia is the art teacher at Carmel Del Mar School.

 

 

GOOGLY-EYED PETS AND PUPPETS

Stitch, stuff, and glue to create wonderful, soft, and cuddly pets!   Decorate them with buttons and bows and call them your own.  Make hand puppets to resemble characters from fairy tales and act out a story.  Penguins, bears, tortoises, and rabbits come alive in your story.  All items made with colorful fleece/felt and stuffed with non-allergenic polyester fiberfill. Geetha Chalam has been working for the past 15 years with different art mediums.

 

 

HANDPAINTED CLOTHING

This art to wear class will teach different techniques of painting cloth, such as sponging, stamping, stenciling, splashing, embellishing, and more.  The first week you will recycle your used clothing to give it a whole new look.  The second week new items like bags, T-shirts, hats, aprons, socks, and more will be designed.  We will celebrate our creations with a “Project Funway Fashion Show!” Susan Twohy has been painting, designing, knitting, crocheting, weaving, and selling wearable art for 20 years.

 

 

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL

Looking for a fun dance camp this summer that is a great way to learn all types of dance and enjoy friends for two weeks?  Join Ms. Jenn from the Dance With Nance Co. and learn fun jazz, ballet, and modern dance routines to songs from Disney’s High School Musical: “Get Your Head in the Game,” “ We’re all in this together,” “ Start of Something New,” and “Bop to the Top!” Learn how to choreograph your own steps, make a backdrop, and art projects.  Jen Estess is a graduate of UCLA with a major in dance.

You will also learn the ancient Japanese art of drumming.   Become a citizen of CCW’s “Land of the Rising Fun!” Kimiko Lange is a recent graduate of Wellesley College with a B.A. in Japanese Language and Literature. 

 

 

LET’S PARTY

Learn how to throw your own awesome birthday party, tea party, soccer party, pizza get-together, and more.  This workshop starts with picking a theme, designing invitations, planning a menu (stressing healthy eating and food safety), table setting, room decorations, music, games, activities, and party favors.  This class will give students hands-on experience as they create their own party program, with “American Idol” style contests to pick the best party planner. MIMIC THE MASTERS

A great way to create art is to mimic the work of other artists.  Learn to describe the works and unique styles of artists such as Picasso, Monet, Matisse, and others in terms of color, design, form, and composition.  We’ll talk about the artists, when they lived, and how their cultures influenced them.  Then, using a variety of media, you will “mimic” the artist’s style.  Have fun with self-expression while learning something new! Julie Cunningham teaches first grade at Ocean Air Elementary School.

 

 

OLYMPIC FENCING:
Foil, Epee, and Theatrical Combat
Grades 3-4   Session 2

EN GUARDE? READY? FENCE! Team Touché Fencing teaches children of all ages the martial art of foil and epee fencing.  Once the sport of European nobility, today this exciting sport is available in San Diego.  Young athletes learn balance, athleticism and respect during healthy competition. The class concludes with a genuine kids fencing tournament for the delight of competitors and spectators.  After completing the basic fencing curriculum, students get a chance to learn theatrical fencing moves, just like Star Wars and Pirate of the Caribbean. Ted Padgitt is Head Coach of Team Touché and is the 2005 West Coast Champion.

 

 

PICTURE PERFECT

Become a photographer and discover the endless possibilities for creating unique photographs and photo crafts.  You will learn how to take better portraits and landscape photographs while also learning how to hand color, crop, and manipulate photos to create original works of art.  Antique and abstract photography as well as many other photographic principles and styles will be presented.  Syd Williams teaches at Farr Elementary School.

 

 

PRINT & PAPER MAKING
Grades 3-4   Session 1
                     

This class (and Screen Printing)  will design the 2008 CCW t-shirt. 

We’ll explore various ways of making paper with designs including plaster mold making, block printing and silk screen. Silk-screen a shirt. Design and make stickers for your club. Print a thank you card for Grandma! Design, carve, ink, and print! Learn the art of printmaking and embossing using a variety of methods, styles, and techniques. Safely carve your original designs on linoleum blocks and other surfaces. Produce prints for stationary and logos, while working toward a final design.  Students in this class receive a complimentary CCW shirt.    Dale McLeod is a teacher, a graphic artist, and a fabric screen printer.

 

 

PRODUCT TESTING

Are you tired of the same old science experiments?  Had enough of mixing cornstarch and water, or baking soda and vinegar?  If you can't stand to do "static electricity with balloons" one more time, then this workshop is for you!  Join us as we take chemistry to the next level. Make your own toothpaste and test how well it cleans.  Combine ingredients to make your own soda and have a taste test.  Make your own bouncy ball and see how high it bounces.  Enjoy creating your own recipes. Uma Krishnan teaches science at Torrey Hills School.

 

 

ROCK PAINTING

YES!  You can paint rocks.  Learn the art of magically transforming plain dull-looking rocks into works of art.  Create faces with every imaginable expression.  Paint frogs, beavers, and penguins in their own habitats.  Create mice ready to grab a slab of cheese.  Let the creative juices flow and make your own wild animals in a mini-zoo.  All items will be coated with water soluble non-toxic varnish to admire for a long time to come. Geetha Chalam has been working for the past 15 years with different art mediums.

 

 

ROOTS, SHOOTS, BUCKETS AND BOOTS

Experience the wonder and fun of connecting to nature through gardening activities. Design your own garden sign and stepping stone.  Use your garden tools to plant beans, carrots, radishes, and even a grasshead.  Construct a worm farm, build a gourd bird house, and much more!! Join Tamara Hanlon on a garden adventure and learn about the wonders of nature. Tamara Hanlon is returning for her sixth year teaching with CCW.  She has 18 years of professional experience working with children.

 

 

SAY IT WITH YOUR HANDS!
BEGINNING SIGN LANGUAGE
Grades 2-3   Session 1
                     

Join us and learn the basics of American Sign Language (ASL).  This class is for kids who want to learn to talk with their hands.  We’ll use games, theater, videos, and computer technology to learn the fundamentals.  Come have fun learning a new language!  David Skinner teaches fifth grade at Carmel Del Mar and continues to develop his ASL skills as he tries to keep up with his youngest daughter who communicates solely in sign language!

 

 

SCREEN PRINTING
Grades 4+    Session 1

 

This class (and Print & Paper Making) will design the 2008  CCW t-shirt.

An open workshop where kids can express themselves making t-shirts and stickers. Students in this class receive a complimentary CCW shirt.  Dale McLeod is a teacher, a graphic artist, and a fabric screen printer.

 

 

SKINNER’S SPEED SHOP
Grades 4+    Session 2
                     

Do you feel the need for speed?  If you answered yes, then this class is for you.  You’ll build your own lightning quick cars and airplanes.  After building your custom creations we’ll have some “friendly competition” and see who takes home the checkered flag! Mini Model Speed Guru, David Skinner, will help you create fun with your own hands.  David Skinner teaches fifth grade at Carmel Del Mar.

 

 

SUMMER BAND
Grades 4+    Session 1

 

Do you love BAND?  Join Miss Mitchell for a two-week session of music making.  All  students with band experience welcome.  We will warm-up on pieces in your band book, but we will also learn exciting concert pieces.  At the end of the session we will have a concert full of music for your family and friends.   Erinn Mitchell teaches music, choir and of course band at Ashley Falls School.

 

 

SUPER SUMMER SCRAPPIN’

Have a blast putting special photos of friends, family, and fun times into a one-of-a-kind scrapbook photo album. Crop photos using special tools, mount with cool paper and stickers, and use special pens to journal and doodle.  Your album will be a keepsake you’ll treasure forever. Class supplies include an 8 1/2 x 11” album, page protectors, mounting supplies, paper, stickers, and more. Tracy Borin has been teaching scrapbooking classes for over 9 years in the Carmel Valley area.

 

 

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE
Grades 2-3     Session 1/Session 2
                      

Learn the mysteries of water through science experiments in this fun and interactive workshop.  Explore how water dissolves substances, build your own water filter to clean muddy water, test for buoyancy, float an egg, make an indoor rainbow, perform surface tension experiments, and clean an oil spill.  You will build a water xylophone and learn to play songs with it.  You will have so much fun experimenting with water; you will never want to come out of the bathtub at home!  Uma Krishnan teaches science at Torrey Hills School.
